I’m a journalist, author, editor and broadcaster – and my subject is classical and contemporary music, and music education.
Currently I’m Consultant Editor of BBC Music Magazine and Editor-in-Chief of publications for Kings Place Music Foundation. I’ve been editor of BBC Music Magazine, The Strad and magazines for the South Bank Centre and the Royal Opera House. I’m also a freelance writer and critic who contributes to the Financial Times, Guardian, Music Teacher and Saga Magazine, BBC Radio 3 and 4, and writes programme notes for all the major ensembles and venues in London.
My books include Boosey & Hawkes, the publishing story (2005), Spirit of the Orchestra (Orchestra of the Age of the Enlightenment 2006) and The history and future of music (Royal Philharmonic Society 2008). I also co-edited Fanfare (BBC Books) with Duncan Minshull, a collection of short stories on the subject of music by an array of leading novelists.
I run a private Kodály-based music teaching practice in south London, Soundsense – teaching musicianship through singing.
